DealerCenter vs. Lot Jacket: which one an Ontario used-car lot can actually use

By Naz Mitchell · Founder, Lot Jacket8 min read

DealerCenter is really two products. The original, built by NowCom in Los Angeles, is a full US dealer management system used by more than 20,000 dealerships, from US$99 a month on Capterra, whose listing gives its available country as the United States only; its titling and temp-tag features are built for US state processes. DealerCenter Canada is a separate web-based DMS that Northlake Financial, an auto-finance company based in Barrie, Ontario, offers exclusively to its own dealer partners, built around fast deal submission and approval, with no published price. Lot Jacket is neither a DMS nor a lender tool: it does the Ontario deal file, from scanned documents to an e-signed bill of sale to the garage register. Which fits depends on whether you need a whole DMS, already finance through Northlake, or mainly need the paperwork done right.

DealerCenter keeps coming up when Ontario dealers ask Google what software to use. It has turned up in the AI answer for “used car dealer software Ontario”, it has a 4.9-star Capterra listing with more than 1,400 reviews, and there is a Canadian edition. What the search results don't make obvious is that the US product and the Canadian one are different things, sold different ways, to different dealers. This comparison sorts that out first, then puts both next to Lot Jacket.

The short version

DealerCenter (US) is a full DMS from NowCom, 20,000+ dealerships, from US$99/month on Capterra, listed for the United States only. DealerCenter Canada is a web-based DMS that Northlake Financial offers exclusively to its dealer partners, no public price. Lot Jacket isn't a DMS: it does the Ontario deal file, bill of sale and garage register, at $249/month + $599 setup (CAD).

DealerCenter, the US product

DealerCenter's own site describes a complete dealer management system for independent and buy-here-pay-here dealers: desking and deal management, finance and insurance calculations, lender integrations and credit bureau access, an auction centre and VIN decoding, a CRM with text and email, websites with more than 40 themes, a BHPH module with collections and recurring payments, and a growing set of AI agents for sales, websites and vehicle listings. It says more than 20,000 dealerships use it and offers an optional 30-day free trial. Its privacy policy points to NowCom, the Los Angeles company behind it.

Two details matter for an Ontario lot. Capterra's listing gives the available country as the United States, and the deal-document features the site names, such as vehicle registration and titling, electronic titling and temporary tags, are US state-DMV processes. Ontario's equivalents (the UVIP, the ServiceOntario transfer, the garage register) aren't mentioned anywhere on the site. That isn't a criticism of the product; it is a product built for a different market.

DealerCenter Canada, the lender edition

DealerCenter Canada is offered by Northlake Financial, whose head office is in Barrie, Ontario. Northlake's product description calls it a web-based DMS designed to increase speed and efficiency, and its headline capability is instant deal decision automation to speed up deal submission and approval. The key line is the access rule: it is offered exclusively to Northlake dealer partners. To use it, you first become a Northlake authorized dealer.

That model has real advantages if Northlake is already your main lender: the software and the financing are designed to work together, and a lender has every reason to make submission fast. The questions to ask are the ones the public description doesn't answer: what it costs, whether it submits to other lenders, what happens to your data if you stop placing deals with Northlake, and how it handles Ontario contract disclosures. Northlake publishes no price, and its DealerCenter resources page returned a 404 when we checked in October 2026.

Eight questions for the DealerCenter Canada call

Because Northlake publishes so little, the useful work happens on the sales call. These are the questions whose answers decide whether a lender-supplied DMS fits a small Ontario lot:

  1. What does it cost, and does the price change with how many deals I place with Northlake?
  2. Can I submit to other lenders from inside it, or only to Northlake? If only Northlake, where do my other deals live?
  3. Who owns the data, and how do I export every deal file, with its documents, if I stop being a Northlake partner?
  4. Does it generate an Ontario used-vehicle contract with the section 42 disclosures and the section 40(6) as-is statement, or do I attach my own UCDA form?
  5. Does it keep the garage register required by the Highway Traffic Act and Regulation 595, or is that still a binder?
  6. Where are records stored, and can it produce a complete file by VIN for an OMVIC inspector six years later?
  7. Does it support e-signatures, and does the signed copy go into the deal file automatically?
  8. What is the contract term, and what happens to access if the partnership agreement ends?

Question 3 matters most. Section 56 of O. Reg. 333/08 keeps you responsible for six years of records whatever software you used to make them, so a system you can lose access to has to give you a clean way out. Ask the same eight questions of us on a demo; our published prices are on the pricing page, and the switching guide covers what moving systems actually involves.

The last row is the honest one. If you need a CRM, a website and lender submissions in one login, Lot Jacket is not that, and we'd rather say so here than on a demo call.

The Ontario paperwork test

Whichever system you look at, run these on a live demo with one of your own recent deals. They are the things an OMVIC inspector checks and a generic DMS is most likely to miss:

  1. Section 42 disclosures. Enter a car with prior daily-rental use. Does the contract print the disclosure in writing, or does someone have to remember to type it?
  2. The as-is statement. Sell it as-is. Does the section 40(6) wording appear in bold with a place for the buyer's initials? The as-is guide has the exact requirements.
  3. The all-in price. Add an admin fee and a safety charge. Are they inside the advertised price and itemized on the contract, as section 40(2) requires?
  4. The garage register. Does buying and selling the car write the Reg. 595 entry, or is the register a separate job?
  5. Six-year retrieval. Ask them to pull a deal from two years ago by VIN. Section 56 of O. Reg. 333/08 requires at least six years of retention; the retention guide explains what has to be kept and where.

Year-one cost at 120 deliveries

A lot doing 10 cars a month. Only published prices are used; where a vendor doesn't publish one, the table says so.

OptionCalculationYear one
DealerCenter (US), entryFrom US$99 × 12, modules extra; not sold for CanadaFrom US$1,188
DealerCenter CanadaNot published; requires Northlake partnershipUnknown
Lot Jacket Core$249 × 12 + $599 setup$3,587
Lot Jacket founding dealer$149 × 12, setup waived (15 spots)$1,788

On price alone, Lot Jacket Core costs more than DealerCenter's US entry tier and does less. The comparison only tips our way if the US product can't serve you (it isn't listed for Canada), the Canadian one ties you to a lender you don't want to be tied to, or the problem you're paying to solve is the Ontario deal file itself. A note from the lot floor

Lot Jacket runs inside two working Ontario lots, Afghan Automotive in Toronto and Momo Cars in Niagara Falls, and the thing that shaped it most is that the deal file has to be complete whoever funds the deal, and on cash deals where nobody does. That is how we look at any system bundled with a lender: the convenience is real on the deals that go to that lender, and the question to ask is what happens on the ones that don't. We built Lot Jacket to sit beside whatever financing you use rather than inside one lender's portal.

Who should pick which

  • You already place most deals with Northlake: ask for DealerCenter Canada first. Run the paperwork test above before you commit.
  • You're in Ontario and looking at the US DealerCenter: confirm Canadian availability in writing before a trial. Capterra lists it for the United States.
  • You need a full DMS and finance through several lenders: compare Canadian DMS platforms, then check whether their Ontario paperwork passes the test.
  • Your problem is the deal file, not the DMS: that is what deal jacket software is for, and it is the only thing Lot Jacket does.

How Lot Jacket handles it

Lot Jacket scans the ownership, UVIP, safety and auction invoice with the document scanner, generates the bill of sale from those fields with the Ontario disclosures in place, gets it e-signed, and writes the garage register from the same deal. It doesn't submit to lenders and doesn't try to. See pricing for the plans.

Frequently asked questions

Is DealerCenter available in Canada?

Two different ways. The main DealerCenter product from NowCom is listed on Capterra with the United States as its available country, and its own site doesn't mention Canada. Separately, Northlake Financial offers a web-based DMS called DealerCenter Canada, which its LinkedIn product page describes as offered exclusively to Northlake dealer partners. To get it, you become a Northlake authorized dealer first.

How much does DealerCenter cost?

DealerCenter's own site doesn't publish prices and mentions an optional 30-day free trial. Its Capterra listing shows a starting price of US$99 with modular pricing (DMS modules around US$40 to US$65, marketing tools US$25 to US$75). Northlake publishes no price for DealerCenter Canada. Lot Jacket Core is $249 a month plus a $599 one-time setup fee, in Canadian dollars.

Does DealerCenter handle OMVIC paperwork?

Neither DealerCenter's site nor Northlake's DealerCenter Canada description mentions OMVIC, the UCDA bill of sale, section 42 disclosures or the Ontario garage register. That doesn't prove the Canadian edition lacks them; it means you should ask for a live demo of an Ontario used-vehicle contract with an as-is statement and a prior-rental disclosure before you sign.

Is DealerCenter Canada tied to Northlake Financial?

Yes. Northlake's own description says DealerCenter Canada is offered exclusively to Northlake dealer partners, and it highlights instant deal decision automation for deal submission and approval. Northlake doesn't say publicly whether the system supports submitting to other lenders, so if you place deals with several lenders, ask that question directly.

Can I use Lot Jacket alongside a DMS like DealerCenter?

Yes. Lot Jacket doesn't do lender submissions, CRM, websites or accounting, so dealers who need those keep their DMS and use Lot Jacket for the deal file: scanning the ownership, UVIP and safety, generating and e-signing the bill of sale, and keeping the garage register. Whether paying for both makes sense depends on how well your DMS already handles Ontario paperwork.

Which is better for a 1-3 person Ontario lot?

If you already finance through Northlake and want one system that submits deals and runs the lot, DealerCenter Canada is the obvious thing to try first. If you finance through several lenders on Dealertrack and your pain is the paperwork, a deal-jacket tool fits better. The US DealerCenter product isn't built for Ontario at all.
